Who Ought to Read This
When you call something a "cancer book," that immediately suggests that the book is directed at people who already have cancer. To be honest, it's a bit of a "spin" problem for us, because we actually want to reach another, more considerable portion of the population-namely, all those who don't have cancer yet.
The suggestions in these pages certainly are useful for those who have already encountered the ugly disease. Those with cancer benefit if they start right now doing the things they should have done to prevent cancer from coming up in the first place. We also have in mind those who have previously had it, and folks in that category may indeed be motivated to ask, "What can I do so that this doesn't happen again?" We can mention, too, that these techniques are good for a lot more than cancer prevention; they can be used to simply pro mote health.
Our intended reader is the everyday person who does not yet have cancer and is in the enviable position of being able to prevent it from ever arising. Some people know that the threat of cancer is considerable. A mother, brother, sister, or cousin may have developed the sickness, and such people may feel that they are at risk. We certainly have these people in mind for this book. Likewise, those with moderate risk may be our audience-such as those who have reached the age where, statistically, their chances of falling sick from cancer seem to increase.
There is no one who has absolutely no risk of getting cancer, so there is no one we do not have in mind as we prepare these pages. And that, above all, is our point. We're thinking of the everyday person as we make these recommendations the relatively healthy person driving to work, going to college, mowing the lawn, watching soaps on tv; dining out, or, in general, living in the mainstream of life without that much concern about their health.
The thing is, we want people to start making a few, simple adjustments to their routines right now, before they get sick, so that they won't ever get cancer. The whole approach may be a lot less macho than waiting until people develop cancerous tumors and then trying to expunge the spreading malaise. Yet, it's an approach that really works. .. much more effective than if you wait until the disease appears.
The character of our audience helps to explain a couple of things about this book-first, it's shortness, which makes sense when we're trying to appeal to those who aren't that eager to learn about these materials anyway; second, it's tone, which we discuss a bit in the next section.
